The Story Behind
Lilyrose Senior Living
Every community has a story.
Ours begins with a woman whose life was defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.
Lilyrose Senior Living is inspired by the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Lillie Rosa Minoka-Hill, one of the first Native American women physicians in the United States and the first woman physician in Wisconsin to be awarded lifetime membership in the Wisconsin State Medical Society.
After graduating from medical school in Philadelphia in 1899, Dr. Minoka-Hill moved to Wisconsin to serve the Oneida Nation and the surrounding community. Widowed while raising six young children, she continued answering the call to care for others with courage, resilience, and grace.
In her own words:
“It has been a privilege to be helpful to those in need of help and to do so as promptly as I could. I felt it was the Master’s work assigned to me. I must therefore be a willing worker, though sometimes, a weary worker.”
Those words continue to inspire the spirit of Lilyrose today. While healthcare has changed dramatically over the past century, the heart of caring for people has not. At Lilyrose, we believe every resident deserves to be known, respected, and supported as an individual. Whether someone chooses independent living, assisted living, care suites, or memory care, our purpose is to create an environment where residents can live with dignity, confidence, and a true sense of belonging.
Following Dr. Minoka-Hill’s passing in 1952, the Oneida Nation and the surrounding community honored her with a monument bearing these words: “Physician. Good Samaritan. Friend to people of all religions in this community.” Those words reflect the values we strive to live every day.
